In this article i will tell you about movefilex function and it's uses

So let's start with what is movefileex function ?

Well it justs Moves an existing file or a directory, including its children.

But you might think hey what the hell ? when we have .net framework why do we need this api ?

well the answer is sometimes you might need to move a file which is different from normal files like files which are in use . well in this case you can use movefileex function with dwFlags value 4 which will replace the file during machine reboot. This is very useful there are other options also that you can specify to dwFlags parameter.

Here is the function provided by windows :

__in_opt LPCTSTR lpNewFileName,
__in DWORD dwFlags
);

lpExistingFileName [in]
The current name of the file or directory on the local computer.

If dwFlags specifies MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT, the file cannot exist on a remote share, because delayed operations are performed before the network is available.

In the ANSI version of this function, the name is limited to MAX_PATH characters. To extend this limit to 32,767 wide characters, call the Unicode version of the function and prepend "\\?\" to the path. For more information, see Naming a File

Windows 2000: If you prepend the file name with "\\?\", you cannot also specify the MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT flag for dwFlags.
lpNewFileName [in, optional]
The new name of the file or directory on the local computer.

When moving a file, the destination can be on a different file system or volume. If the destination is on another drive, you must set the MOVEFILE_COPY_ALLOWED flag in dwFlags.

When moving a directory, the destination must be on the same drive.

If dwFlags specifies MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT and lpNewFileName is NULL, MoveFileEx registers the lpExistingFileName file to be deleted when the system restarts. If lpExistingFileName refers to a directory, the system removes the directory at restart only if the directory is empty.

dwFlags [in]
This parameter can be one or more of the following values.

Value Meaning
MOVEFILE_COPY_ALLOWED
2 (0×2) If the file is to be moved to a different volume, the function simulates the move by using the CopyFile and DeleteFile functions.

This value cannot be used with MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT.

MOVEFILE_CREATE_HARDLINK
16 (0×10) Reserved for future use.

MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT
4 (0×4) The system does not move the file until the operating system is restarted. The system moves the file immediately after AUTOCHK is executed, but before creating any paging files. Consequently, this parameter enables the function to delete paging files from previous startups.

This value can be used only if the process is in the context of a user who belongs to the administrators group or the LocalSystem account.

This value cannot be used with MOVEFILE_COPY_ALLOWED.

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP: For information about special situations where this functionality can fail, and a suggested workaround solution, see Files are not exchanged when Windows Server 2003 restarts if you use the MoveFileEx function to schedule a replacement for some files in the Help and Support Knowledge Base.
Windows 2000: If you specify the MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT flag for dwFlags, you cannot also prepend the file name that is specified by lpExistingFileName with "\\?".
MOVEFILE_FAIL_IF_NOT_TRACKABLE
32 (0×20) The function fails if the source file is a link source, but the file cannot be tracked after the move. This situation can occur if the destination is a volume formatted with the FAT file system.

MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING
1 (0×1) If a file named lpNewFileName exists, the function replaces its contents with the contents of the lpExistingFileName file, provided that security requirements regarding access control lists (ACLs) are met. For more information, see the Remarks section of this topic.

This value cannot be used if lpNewFileName or lpExistingFileName names a directory.

MOVEFILE_WRITE_THROUGH
8 (0×8) The function does not return until the file is actually moved on the disk.

Setting this value guarantees that a move performed as a copy and delete operation is flushed to disk before the function returns. The flush occurs at the end of the copy operation.

This value has no effect if MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT is set

Background: C# is a simple, modern, general-purpose, object-oriented programming language. Anders Hejlsberg is the chief architect for C#. It has an object-oriented syntax that evolved out of C++. The most recent version of the language is 3.0, and it was released in conjunction with the .NET Framework 3.5In 1999, when Anders Hejlsberg formed a team to create the language, they originally planned to call it COOL (C-like Object Oriented Language). However, there were copyright problems with that name, and it was renamed C#. C Sharp in music means a half of a step higher in pitch. In programming, C Sharp indicates that this is an outgrowth of C++.

Anders Hejlsberg has repeated said that flaws in most major programming languages (e.g. C++, Java, Delphi, and Smalltalk) drove the fundamentals of the Common Language Runtime (CLR), which, in turn, drove the design of the C# programming language itself.

Versions:

C# 1.0 – introduced 2000 / released January 2002
C# 1.2 – released April 2003
C# 2.0 – released November 2005
C# 3.0 – released November 2007
C# 4.0 – in development

Design Goals:

C# is intended to be a simple, modern, general-purpose, object-oriented programming language.

The language should provide support for:

strong type checking
array bounds checking
detection of attempts to use uninitialized variables
automatic garbage collection
Software robustness
durability
programmer productivity

The language is for developing software components suitable for deployment in distributed environments.

Source code portability and programmer portability are important, especially for those programmers already familiar with C and C++.

internationalization is very important.

C# is intended to be suitable for writing applications for both hosted and embedded systems

Distingushing Features of C#

There are no global variables or functions. All methods and members must be declared within classes. Static members of public classes can substitute for global variables and functions.
Local variables cannot shadow variables of the enclosing block, unlike C and C++.
C# supports a strict Boolean datatype, bool. Statements that take conditions, such as while and if, require an expression of a boolean type. While C++ also has a boolean type, it can be freely converted to and from integers
In C#, memory address pointers can only be used within blocks specifically marked as unsafe, and programs with unsafe code need appropriate permissions to run.
Managed memory cannot be explicitly freed; instead, it is automatically garbage collected.
Multiple inheritance is not supported, although a class can implement any number of interfaces.
C# is more typesafe than C++.

Background: ADO.NET is an outgrowth of ADO (ActiveX Data Objects) technology. ADO relied on COM objects whereas ADO.NET is based on the .NET Framework. ADO.NET does not replace ADO for the COM programmer; rather, it provides the .NET programmer with access to relational data sources, XML, and application data.

Purpose: ADO.NET is used to access data and data services. The data is usually a relational database, but it does not have to be.

Architecture: ADO.NET is part of the Base Class Library. ADO.NET consists of two parts:

Data Provider

Data providers provide access to the data source. The data source can be: SQL Server, Oracle, or OLEDB (ex. Access). Each data source has its own set of provider objects, but they all include these common utility classes:

Connection – Provides a connection to the datasoure. It is like a phone line that connects the application to the database.
Command – Command is used to perform some action (add, update, delete, select, etc.) on the database.
Parameter – This is a variable in the command.
DataAdapter – The data adapter provides a bridge between the data source object and the data set object.
DataReader – Allows you to access records sequentially, one record at a time.

Datasets

DataSets represent in-memory relational databases. Datasets represent a schema that can contain one or more tables and the relationships between the tables.

DataTable represents a single data table that is made up of rows and columns.
DataView is an overlay for a datatable that can contain a sort and a filter.
DataRelation is a relation between tables.
Constraint describes an enforced property of the database.

A DataSet is populated from a database by a DataAdapter whose Connection and Command properties have been specified. A DataSet can save its contents to XML, or populate itself from XML, making it very useful for web services and distributed computing.

Need some inspiration? The first video on .NET programming that I can remember watching featured Anders Hejlsberg.

Anders Hejlsberg is the C# Chief Architect for Microsoft. He has a very charming personality and a real talent at finding simple ways to perform complicated tasks. If you are looking for someone that possesses many of the characteristics of what the "ideal" for a programmer should be, Anders Hejlsberg is a good person to try to emulate.

Before joining Microsoft in 1996, Hejlsberg was the original author of Turbo Pascal, a revolutionary integrated development environment, and chief architect of its successor, Delphi.

Here is a collection of 9 videos that feature Anders Hejlsberg. My hope is that these videos will help to inspire all of us to be the best that we can be.
