All the software that I used either came installed on my computer or it was free. I used CamStudio to create the videos. CamStudio is open source and totally free. It works like Camtasia, but does not cost the $300 that Camtasia does. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit the videos. Windows Movie Maker comes free of charge with Windows XP. I used Microsoft Power Point to give an overview of what the video was about and then did a screen-capture of the powerpoint slide with CamStudio. I used the free software that comes with Kodak share to create slide shows of photos I was trying to sell. Then, I did a screen capture of the slide show with CamStudio. Finally, I created the final credits with Windows Movie Maker, and used the description fields for each video to point back to money pages on web sites where the photos are.

What is An Authority Site?

Dictionary.com defines "Authority" as follows:

Authority: Au-thor-i-ty [uh-thawr-i-tee] – noun:
1. An accepted source of expert information or advice: a noted authority on birds; a reference book often cited as an authority.
2. Power to influence or persuade resulting from knowledge or experience: political observers who acquire authority with age.

In internet terminology, an Authority Site is one that has a large empire of high-ranking pages linking back to it. Well-known examples include About.com, Wikipedia.org, and so on. These are sites that others look to (and link to) as experts in the field.

In this study, "Authority Site" simply refers to any site that has been promoted with Authority Site Tools available from Jack Humphrey.

Preliminary Study of 56 Randomly Selected Authority Sites

This study started by randomly selecting 56 sites that are being promoted with Authority Site tools. On average, these sites ranked better than 87% of all other sites monitored by Alexa (see chart).

A Look at Seasoned Authority Sites

One problem with the preliminary study is that Alexa uses three months of data to calculate its rankings. However, many of the sites listed in the random sample were only a few weeks or months old. So even though weekly Alexa statistics indicated that these sites were ranking extremely high, the three month Alexa ranking was lower. To adjust for this problem, the original list of 56 sites was examined to see how many months of archived blogs existed for each site. Then, only sites that contained over 4 months of blog archives were analyzed. The chart below shows that these authority sites ranked in the top 5% on Alexa.

TIP ONE: THE IMPORTANCE OF KEY WORDS

In the world of marketing online, one topic comes up over and over with great frequency: site rankings. It can sometimes seem to be the 'holy grail' in the highly competitive world of online marketing, where search engines rule supreme. The reality is that unless you have deep pockets indeed, SEO optimization in the long run will be more affordable than simply buying placement with click campaigns and advertisements.

This is the good news. The bad news is that the process is slow, and it can take months (and months and months) of dedicated effort to achieve decent rankings (one reason you don't want to abandon those paid campaigns while optimizing your site). But it is well worth the time and effort in the long run, since it addresses the one issue that is foremost when marketing your product and services online: people use search engines such as Google and MSN to do their looking. And search engine listings that are highly ranked consistently outperform 'paid listings'.

So how do you get your site listed and ranked highly? Does it take dedicating your life fulltime to this effort, or specialized knowledge? The answer is "yes" and "no". It can help tremendously to hire the assistance of a firm that specializes in SEO (and, in fact, this is highly recommended). They can give you professional guidance in this arena, and steer you away from common mistakes.

But for those with a limited budget (which is most of us, nowadays, it seems) it's also possible to do your own site optimization, and work on a long-term campaign to help your site rise. It isn't easy (unlike those ads and books online that promise overnight success with no effort), but by rolling up your shirtsleeves and diving in, you can learn a tremendous amount, and help your site get found when people type in your products into a search engine.

TIP TWO: SELECT YOUR KEYWORDS CAREFULLY

Search engine keywords are what lead people (as in potential customers) who type in phrases in their favorite search engine to your site. When they go onto Google, Excite, or other search engines and directories, and are looking for a specific item, keywords are the ones that they type in during their search.

To market effectively to them, you will need to think like them (this is the basis of all excellent marketing). You will want to determine:

What phrases people type in when looking for your product, service, or content during their online searches (including the most common

misspellings, by the way). Not sure? Try looking at your web stats for your site. You should see an extremely valuable area called "search strings", with a list of words underneath it.

These search strings are the phrases that actually brought people to your web site. Which ones were the most popular? You'll want to note these. But you'll want to add more.

Sit down for a minute, and think of every possible phrase people might use for searching for your product. At this point, don't edit yourself, just let the words flow and write them down. If you sell used Chevrolets in Alexandria, VA, you might come up with "used cars, used Chevrolets, vintage cars, reconditioned cars, Chevrolet dealers, Alexandria VA car dealers, Alexandria VA used cars", as just a start.

By now, you should have a list. Go through it again, and decide which ones seem the most focused for your product or service. You want search engine keywords that will bring targeted customers to your site, who are interested in doing business with you, and the right keywords can help accomplish this. Be specific and relevant in your choices. Then, alphabetize your list, since some search engines and directories list pages alphabetically; so use your best phrases in alphabetical order whenever possible for better optimization.

Next, analyze which keyword phrases are realistic for obtaining high rankings. While you may sell used autos, and want to get top rankings for that term, 'used autos' is an extremely popular and general phrase, and odds are, difficult to get good rankings for. But if you sell used Chevrolets in Alexandria, Virginia, then it's realistic to hope for high rankings for search engine phrases for 'Alexandria used Chevrolets'. You'll also get a more targeted audience (think 'more likely to buy from me'), since most of your customers will probably come from your locale).

At this point, you should have a list of keywords. If you have a very short one, or are having trouble thinking of some, you can gain access to professional software at minimal cost. Just start a Google adwords campaign, or a CPC campaign on Overture. Each of these sites have "keyword suggestion" tools that will give you several keywords based on your product or service, and will include the relative popularity of each one.

TIP THREE: PLACE KEYWORDS CAREFULLY

Once you have your keywords, you'll want to use them in the right places. The goal is to help search engines find your site for those phrases, so you will want to place them in spots the engines look closely at. These include the page Title, inside the meta tags, inside the heading tag, in the domain name (more about this in a later lesson), and the keyword tags.

You will also want to sprinkle them liberally throughout the content (text) of your site, with special consideration for the top of your page and its first paragraphs. This is especially important on your home (index page), which is the one that most search engines will cache when spidering through. And please, have some real content on your page, and not just a list of keywords, or your site could go down in its rankings. Search engines do rank according to content relevancy, and the site that says "Our dealership provides quality used Chevrolet cars, reconditioned to meet our customer's needs," (with at least 100 words of good, relevant content) will always rank higher than the site that says, "cars, cars, cars, buy quality used Chevrolet cars, quality used cars are here". In addition, you won't drive away customers offended by poor quality writing and obvious over-usage of marketing phrases.

But you do want to maintain a certain ratio of keyword density in your text; a keyword density of 5 to 7% is usually recommended. If you don't feel comfortable writing copy using keywords, a professional copywriter who specializes in online writing can help you.

THREE COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Mistake #1: One common error that many people make is to forget to place ALT tags for their graphics. You may have a beautiful logo or graphic on your web site, but if you don't have an alt tag, the search engines can't "read it". Be sure to place keywords there, and to label graphics with names that reflect keywords.

Mistake #2: Always have text on your site. When creating your site, search engines depend upon text to decide what your site is about. The more relevant the text, the better. The spiders and bots can't "read" graphics as mentioned above. Don't just make the text for the site one big graphic, as some firms do. The search engines will skip over the graphic, and assume you have no content at all.

Mistake #3: Finally, please don't spam (by trying to 'hide' your keywords by using a font the same color as the background, or repeating keyword phrases over and over in the title and meta tags). Search engines are now excellent at finding those who try to break the rules (and their technology for doing so is getting more sophisticated all the time), and will drop spammers from their indexes like a hot potato. So play by the rules, and when in doubt, ask an ethical SEO firm for advice, or visit one of the many excellent forums online (such as Jill Whalen's High Rankings Search Engine Forums).

Your site will rise more quickly, and enjoy higher rankings, if you follow these tips and their advice. And your traffic will increase, at no cost to you!

I would have thought that the subject of Doorway Pages (Entry Pages, Gateway Pages, etc.) had been exhaustively explored by now, but we tend to forget that there are new users coming on the internet daily, and there hasn't been much coverage on the topic recently.��
There are many design and development tools (free or otherwise) available for the new webmaster, so almost anyone can build a website, but they face the same age-old problem of trying to find ways to get their new site noticed (and the longer it takes, the more frantic they get).
We all go through the same learning curve. We read or hear about various promotion techniques. We get advice on Search Engine Optimization, Opt-in Lists, Safe Lists, E-zine advertising, and the list goes on. There is a wealth of information on the web, but there is probably just as much, or more, misinformation. Not only can the important information change rapidly, but it is awfully easy to stumble across archived information, or a free eBook – and not realize that it is outdated.
Anyway, a reader recently asked me about the usefulness of Doorway Pages to increase their rankings in the search engines. It will soon become obvious what my short answer would have been, but I don't normally just accept someone else's opinion without an explanation. I hope you are the same way.
Doorway pages were first developed as a means to create a page that was optimized for a particular search engine in order to achieve a higher ranking. Because search engines used different algorithms for ranking web sites, it had become impossible to optimize a single page to meet the ranking criteria of all of them. You could get a page ranked high on one search engine and watch your rankings plummet on another.
The answer?
Create multiple (Doorway) pages – each optimized for a single, major search engine, and have each of them link, redirect, or forward to the actual web page you wanted to promote, and then submit that page to that particular search engine – instead of the actual web page your viewer will ultimately see. While it was a little extra work to create 6,7, or even a dozen or more Doorway pages – the general consensus was that the ranking results in the targeted search engines made it all worthwhile.
The problem with this…
As with every good technique, tip, or trick – some overzealous (and that's being kind) "marketers" (and that's being liberal) will find a way to abuse it. Just as some people will put popular search terms in their keywords Meta Tag regardless of whether those terms have any relevance to the web page being submitted, they also began spamming the search engines with Doorway pages.��
Now, understand that the search engines gain their competitive edge by being able to deliver more relevant results to any set of search terms. It is their business purpose, their entire reason for existing. The better they are at doing this, the more popular their service becomes over their competition, and the more successful they will be. They will combat anyone or anything that interferes with their ability to deliver their product or service (wouldn't you?).��
Doorway pages are viewed by the search engines as an attempt to manipulate them and their service. How can they possibly differentiate their service from the competition if they allow their "supplier" (web masters) to dictate what they will deliver to their "customer" (web surfers)?

It didn't take long for the major search engines to learn to identify Doorway pages, and their overwhelming response has been to:
downgrade the results attained through the use of those pages,
refuse to list those pages, or
ban the site from listing on their service altogether
I could have written this article just based on the regular reading I do, but then I would have just been passing on someone else's opinion. In order to respond to my reader with absolute confidence, I first researched over 3 years of articles from a myriad of sources. From those it was easy to see the trend build, and then come into disfavor. Finally, I went to the search engines themselves to read their current policies and guidelines. Some mention Doorway pages specifically, but even those that require a little interpretation are pretty easy to understand.��
The major search engines disapprove of methods that present different content to their spiders than the content that is ultimately presented to the viewer. For your own edification, here are just a few of the listings I found, with snippets from their guidelines:

Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users, or present different content to search engines than you display to users.
Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

Pages that duplicate content, either by excessive submission of the same page, submitting the same pages from multiple domains, or submitting the same content from multiple hosts
Pages that are machine-generated with minimal or no content, whose sole purpose is to get a user to click to another page

The Alternative:
If your keyword phrases are relevant to your site content, then it follows that the content will naturally include those relevant keyword phrases. If not, then you need to either rethink that content and its presentation – or rethink your choice of keyword phrases. It's really that simple. Each page of your site can and should have its own topic and its own set of relevant keyword phrases. Make sure that every page of your site contains a Title, a Meta description, and Meta keywords (again those keyword phrases that are relevant to that page).
Then when you submit your "home" page to a search engine, it can spider your entire site through your linked pages, picking up all that Meta information so that each page gets listed properly. In a sense, every page on your site becomes sort of a "Doorway" to the rest of the site. Concentrate on building content, and give the engines just what they want to see anyway: relevant content.��
When submitting your web site to directories, submit each page you want listed (with the relevant search terms for that page).���
Then of course, it is a matter of sitting back and waiting unless you opt for one of the "express" listing services or "pay-per-click" placement – but those are separate topics, deserving of their own articles. With straight submission, it will take some time for your site to even get listed, but once you're there you can get very targeted traffic for a very long time to come.

Once you find it, send an email asking if they want to use a particular piece. Make sure that your email mentions the free publication of articles.
Besides online site promotion, you can also perform offline web promotion to bring in traffic. Use a URL that people can remember and a domain name that defines what you do and offer. Word of mouth has always been an effective web promotion method and by increasing awareness of your site to the outside world, you can increase the traffic on the Internet as well.

Rule #1 Target words that are attainable and precise
Every business wants to be ranked #1 for the best keywords. In most cases however, it is the secondary tier of terms that delivers your best results. This is especially true if you are just starting your SEO and have a limited number of existing inbound links. By initially optimizing for the second tier of keywords, your speed to achieving rankings for targeted keywords increases dramatically.
Assessing your competition before embarking on your SEO project will help you fully understand the probability of SEO success. Look at your competitor page rank and link popularity and benchmark versus your levels.
Rule #2 – Understand the concept of keyword density and make sure your terms are in the right percentage range

Keyword density is the percentage of total words within the body of a page with the keyword that you are targeting. For example, a fishing products retailer trying to optimize your homepage for the terms "fishing supplies", the term "fishing supplies" should represent between 5-10% of the total text on the page.
Go over 10% through un-natural writing, and your page may be flagged as spam. Go less than 5%, and your density may not be high enough. 5-10% has proven to be the "sweet spot" in today's search algorithms regarding keyword density.
Rule #3 – Leverage "viral" marketing for your link building
Because of "link farms", the major engines have reconstructed their algorithms to place a higher value on one way links versus reciprocal links. Outside of buying these links, which is considered “black hat tactics” by Google engineers, the most effective way to grow link numbers is to syndicate original content via the internet to other content-hungry webmasters.
By crafting original articles that include your business URL, and manually submitting these articles to content networks/article directories on the internet, you have a natural "one way" credit link for the content when these articles are shown live by other sites. These one way links make you more of an authority within the engines and hence drive up your natural rankings.
Rule #4 – 2-3 primary keywords per page, no more, no less
Each page should focus on ranking well for 2-3 keywords per page. Optimizing a page for 5+ terms is a waste of time, and will only lead to poor rankings for those attempted terms. Targeting tags and content with more specific keywords will increase your chance of search optimization success.
Rule #5 – Tighten up your title tags
Title tags are the biggest “on page” component to the major search engine algorithms. It is crucial that your tag be only the two to three keyword phrases that you are targeting within the webpage and that the keywords are replicated within additional tags and the body of the text.
Avoid commas and stick to a format that has worked for many retailers and brands: Use the “|” key on your keyboard as it is a natural phrase separator that is easier to index within the engines. Take a look at the example below:
Title 1: Fishing Supplies, Tackle, Rods
Title 2: Fishing Supplies | Fishing Tackle | Fishing Rods
The second example is a more effectively written title tag that will rank better. It is more specific to a user, easier to index, and repeats the keyword “fishing” which is pertinent to the theme of the page.
Rule #6 – Include core keyword in the URL if possible
Including a targeted keyword within a URL string has become a vital practice of SEO as of late, especially for eCommerce businesses that are targeting research shoppers who are looking for specific product models or numbers (ex. Sony XR-257).
However, most pages in the eCommerce sector are dynamically generated and include characters such as “?” or “&”, which tend to limit crawling by web spiders. When your URL is filled with these types of stop characters, your full search saturation of indexed pages will likely be limited.
A better practice is to implement a module within your platform that automatically generates static URL’s (i.e. “.htm” URL string). These new URL’s include your most profitable keyword for even more effective indexing. Look below for an example:
Old URL: www.yourcompany.com/category/641?product-632.aspx
New URL: www.yourcompany.com/category/dvd/sony-dvd-recorder-63754.htm
Notice the .htm at the end of the string and the mention of the product within the URL. By executing both, your site will be more deeply crawled and more properly indexed.
Rule #7 – Understand "anchor text" and why it is so critical to SEO
Anchor text is the text of your links on an external site. For instance, using Company X as the example, the link eCommerce Consulting on a link partner site will take a web surfer to http://www.companyx.com.
“eCommerce Consulting” is considered the anchor text for that link. It is crucial that within content syndication and organic link building, your most vital and targeted keywords are represented within the anchor text that points to your website.
Make these changes and you will begin to notice improvements in your search engine rankings. Don’t lose focus on the most important variable, which is providing new content that is relevant to your web visitors.
Search optimization takes patience and a long time. Contrary to outlandish claims made by SEO firms, ranking increases do not happen overnight. Be prepared to wait at least 3-6 months to see any impact, especially if your site has just been recently indexed. A realistic goal is to achieve 10% incremental lifts within the core engines each month.
With consistent efforts toward improving the overall content quality of your site, along with instituting the basic rules outlined above, your hard work will be rewarded and your site will grow organically.
