Business Intelligence (BI) refers to processes, technologies, skills, applications and practices used to support decision making. Here are some common functions of Business Intelligence Technologies:

Business Intelligence is often referred to as a Decision Support System (DSS) because the goal is to provide better hard-factual information that can be used in making decisions. There are three types of information that BI can provide:

historical
current
predictive

Background:

IBM researcher Hans Peter Luhn used the term business intelligence in a 1958 article. Luhn defined intelligence as: "the ability to apprehend the interrelationships of presented facts in such a way as to guide action towards a desired goal."

In 1989 Howard Dresner (later a Gartner Group analyst) suggested that BI should be used as an broad term to describe "concepts and methods to improve business decision making by using fact-based support systems."

Here is a collection of video tutorials on SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is from Microsoft abd it is a server-based report generation software system. It can be used to create a variety of interactive and printed reports. It is administered via a web interface. Reporting services features a web services interface to support the development of custom reporting applications.

SSRS competes with Crystal Reports and other business intelligence tools, and is included in Express, Workgroup, Standard, and Enterprise editions of Microsoft SQL Server as an install option. Reporting Services was first released in 2004 as an add-on to SQL Server 2000. The second version was released as a part of SQL Server 2005 in November 2005. The latest version was released as part of SQL Server 2008 in August 2008.

Reports are defined in Report Definition Language (RDL) in SSRS. RDL is an XML markup language. Reports can be designed using recent versions of Microsoft Visual Studio with the included Business Intelligence Projects plug-in installed or with the included Report Builder, a simplified tool that does not offer all the functionality of Visual Studio. Reports defined by RDL can be generated in a variety of formats including Excel, PDF, CSV, XML, TIFF (and other image formats), and HTML Web Archive. SQL Server 2008 SSRS can also prepare reports in Microsoft Word (DOC) format.

Users can interact with the Report Server web service directly, or instead use Report Manager. The Report Manger is a web-based application that interfaces with the Report Server web service. With Report Manager, users can view, subscribe to, and manage reports as well as manage and maintain data sources and security settings. Reports can be delivered via e-mail or placed on a file system. Security is role-based and can be assigned on an individual item, such as a report or data source, a folder of items, or site wide. Security roles and rights are inherited and can be overloaded.

In addition to using the standalone Report Server that comes with SQL Server, RDL reports can also be viewed using the ASP.NET ReportViewer web control or the ReportViewer Windows Forms control. This allows reports to be embedded directly into web pages or .NET Windows applications. The ReportViewer control processes reports in one of two ways:

server processing, where the report is rendered by and obtained from the Report Server;

local processing, where the control renders the RDL file itself

SQL 2005 reporting services also support ad hoc reports. When creating ad hoc reports, the designer develops a report schema and deploys it on the reporting server, where the user can choose relevant fields/data and generate reports. Users can then download the reports locally.

The next release of Reporting Services is scheduled to be released in 2009 and is part of a larger Business Intelligence release code named Kilimanjaro.

Here is a collection of free video tutorials on SharePoint for Developers. The 16-part video series is presented by Microsoft's Mike Benkovich and Lynn Langit.

Microsoft SharePoint is also called Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies. SharePoint is a collection of products and software elements that includes:

web browser based collaboration functions
process management modules
search modules and a document-management platform

SharePoint can be used to host web sites that access:

shared workspaces
information stores
documents
host defined applications such as wikis and blogs

All users can manipulate or interact with:

web parts
lists
document libraries

Background:

The term "SharePoint" can collectively refer to a number of products ranging from the base platform to various services. The platform is Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), which is included with Windows Server and available as a free download for those with Windows Server licenses. (Vista users can use a helper application from Bamboo Nation to allow them to run SharePoint without having to have Windows Server installed.) Services such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) provide additional functionality and features and are licensed accordingly.

SharePoint, as a collection of technologies, is not intended to simply replace a full file server or to be a single use solution. Instead, it is geared and positioned to play various roles in the business and enterprise environment. Microsoft markets these vectors as Collaboration, Processes, and People.

The SharePoint user interface is a web interface accessed through a browser. While all browsers are supported, only Internet Explorer is fully integrated and able to utilize the full functionality of a SharePoint Solution.

SharePoint sites are functionally ASP.NET 2.0 web applications, which are served using IIS and use a SQL Server database as a data storage back end. All site content data, such as items in document libraries and lists, are stored within an SQL database named by default as "WSS_Content_[ID]".

Microsoft Search Server:

Microsoft Search Server (MSS) is an enterprise search platform from Microsoft. It builds on the search capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. MSS shares its architectural underpinnings with the Windows Search platform for both the querying engine as well as the indexer. MOSS search provides the ability to search metadata attached to documents.

Microsoft has made Microsoft Search Server available as Search Server 2008, released March 2008. A free version, Search Server 2008 Express, is also available. The express edition features the same feature set as the commercial edition, including no limitation on the number of files indexed. However, it is limited to a stand-alone installation and cannot be scaled out to a cluster.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer:

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer is a free WYSIWYG HTML Editor that administrators can use to customize the design of the SharePoint site and that end users can use in designing workflows. SharePoint Designers is the successor to Microsoft FrontPage and replaces it.

Here is a collection of 21 free video tutorials on Windows 7 for developers. Windows 7 is Microsoft's current operating system for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs and media center PCs.

Where Did Windows 7 Get Its Name?

The name for Windows 7 is perfectly in line with previous releases of MS-Windows. Here is the chronology:

One. The very first release of Microsoft Windows: Windows 1.0
Two. The second release of Microsoft Windows: Windows 2.0
Three. The third release of Microsoft Windows (3.0, 3.1): Windows 3.0
Four. The fourth release of Microsoft Windows (95), code named Windows 4.0
Five. Then, Windows 2000 was Windows 5.0; Windows XP was Windows 5.1
Six. The release of Windows Vista was code-identified as Windows 6.0
Seven. So, the next release of Windows will be called “Windows 7“.

Background: Windows 7 was originally code-named Blackcomb in 2003. In 2006, the codename was renamed to Vienna, and, in 2008, the official name became Windows 7. Windows 7 was released for general retail availability on October 22, 2009. This was less than three years after the release of its predecessor, Windows Vista. Windows 7's server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2, was released at the same time.

Unlike Vista, which introduced a lot of new features, Windows 7 has fewer new features and focuses more on becoming more compatible with existing applications in Vista and on performance improvements.

Mac-like RAW image viewing thru the new WIC-enabled image decoders. This enables raw image thumbnails, previewing and metadata in Windows Explorer, along with full-size viewing and slideshows in Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Media Center.
Taskbar Enhancements – Quick Launch toolbar has been replaced with pinning applications to the taskbar. Taskbar buttons can be reordered. To the right of the system clock, there is a small rectangular button that seres as the Show desktop icon. This button is a part of the new feature in Windows 7 called Aeri Peek. Hovering over this button makes all visible windows transparent for a quick look at the desktop.
A new feature called Aero Snap automatically maximizes a window when it is dragged to either the top or left/right edges of the screen. This allows users to snap documents on either side of the screen to compare them.
Windows 7 includes Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 12.

A new networking API with support for building SOAP-based web services in nativecode (as opposed to .NET-based WCF web services)

Windows Live Essentials is a separate download that allows you to install several applications that have been removed from Windows 7 (Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Calendar, and Windows Mail)

Editions:

Windows 7 is available in six different editions, but only the Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions are available for retail sale in most countries. The other editions are aimed at the developing world market or enterprise use. Here is a list of the various edtions:

Windows 7 Starter – Windows Aero theme and 64-bit variant not available. Only comes preinstalled.
Windows 7 Home Basic – only available in emerging markets; some Aero options are excluded along with other new features
Windows 7 Home Premium – aimed at home market segment with such features as Windows Media Center, Windows Aero and touch-screen controls
Windows 7 Professional – aimed at enthusiasts and small business users; has all Windows 7 Home Premium features and add the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain. Other features include: operating as a Remote Desktop server; location aware printing, Encrypting File System, Presentation Mode, Software Restriction Policies;and Windows XP Mode.
Windows 7 Enterprise – sold though volume licensing to companies that have Software Assurance contract with Microsoft. Additional features include: support for Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packages, BitLocker Drive Encryption, and UNIX application support.
Windows 7 Ultimate – contains same features as Windows 7 Enterprise, except this edition is available to home users on an individual license basis. Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional users are able to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate for a fee by using Windows Anytime Upgrade.

The Albert Einstein robot in this video was not developed with Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio, but it does serve to point the direction robotics is heading. (All the other videos in this post do deal with robots that are supported by Microsoft Robotics.)

An ICreate Robot in a Visual Simulation Environment

CCR (Concurrency and Coordination Runtime) – makes asynchronous programming simple. The CCR makes it simple to write programs to handle asynchronous input from multiple robotics sensors and output to motors and actuators. With the use of CCR, we don’t need to do any manual threads management. This can be especially useful in handling concurrency and partial failure. CCR has a failure handling mechanism called Causalities. This is basically a generalization of Try / Catch for multiple threads. But this is for many machines and processes working in synchronous fashion. This is the base of Robotics architecture by Microsoft. You can even use this component for the applications running on a PC instead of a robot. CCR is available in the form of a dynamic link library which may be used by any .net language.
DSS (Decentralized Software Services) is the services architecture, and it is a companion to CCR. This is based on Service Oriented Architecture. This provides the ability to write applications which are highly distributed and modular. This means you can execute your code in the processing work horses and use anywhere in the distributed environment. The DSS makes it simple to access, and respond to, a robot’s state using a Web browser or Windows-based application. This provides for real-time monitoring of robotics sensors and real-time response to motors and actuators.
VPL (Microsoft Visual Programming Language) is a visual programming tool that is used for creating and debugging robot applications, web-based and windows-based interfaces.
VSE (Visual Simulation Environment) allows one to simulate the behavior of robots in a virtual world using NVIDIA PhysX technology (3D engine) that includes advanced physics.

The runtime environment consists of two components: the CCR and the DSS. The runtime is based on a lightweight REST-oriented services model. Making it REST based has made the services and applications to be independent of each other. They may be on the same machine or distributed across different machines connected through any means. When we say REST based, this means that the resources should be available by query strings. These services are available as resources to the other services, applications or User Interfaces. This is actually how Microsoft is able to promise low coupling between services. The Runtime supports from 8-bit to 32-bit robots. These robots may range from Toy Robots to Industrial Robots.

Microsoft Visual Programming Language enables anyone to create and debug robotics programs very easily. Just drag and drop blocks that represent services, and connect them. It is also possible to take a collection of connected blocks and reuse them as a single block elsewhere in the program. VPL follows the Observer Pattern. This means that it is not based on Control flow but on data flow which enables some program elements to get executed when some data arrives. VPL provides a model-driven approach to develop and orchestrate services.

MRDS: Simulated Robot and Environment

Easily simulate robotics applications using realistic 3D simulated models. Since testing with real robots is often expensive, it saves money to start out in a simulated environment first and then move to real robots once the concepts have been proven to work. Microsoft Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) is based on Microsofts XNA Framework and the rendering engine uses AGEIA™ PhysX™ Technology from AGEIA Technologies Inc.. AGEIA Technologies Inc. is a pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics, enabling real-world physics simulation for robot models. PhysX simulations can also be accelerated using AGEIA hardware. These simulations can be recorded and saved as XML files and played back over and over again.

Reuse Modular Services Using a Composable model

Build high-level functions using simple components, providing for reuse of code modules as well as better reliability and replaceability. For example, a lower-level sensor service could be integrated into a navigation service.

Scalable and Extensible Platform

The RDS programming model can be applied to a variety of robot hardware platforms, enabling users to transfer their skills across multiple platforms. The programming interfaces can be used to develop applications on single or multi-core processors.

Easily extend Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio Functionality

Third parties can extend the functionality of RDS by providing additional libraries and services. Hardware or software vendors can make their products easily compatible with RDS.

Supports both remotely connected (PC-based) and robot-based (autonomous) application scenarios

Remotely connected scenarios enable communication from a PC to the robot through a serial port, Bluetooth®, 802.11 (WiFi), or RF modem. Programs can also execute natively on PC-based robots running one of the Microsoft Windows operating systems, enabling fully autonomous operation.

Develop using a wide range of programming languages

MRDS allows you to access the runtime services using the following programming languages: C# and Visual Basic .NET, JScript, and IronPython

Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio allows one to use various packages to add other services to the suite.

Princeton University's DARPA Urban Grand Challenge autonomous car entry was programmed entirely with MRDS.
In 2008 Microsoft launched a simulated robotics competition named RoboChamps using MRDS, four challenges were available : maze, sumo, urban, and mars rover. the simulated environment and robots used by the competition were created by SimplySim and the competition was sponsored by KIA Motors.

Background: C# is a simple, modern, general-purpose, object-oriented programming language. Anders Hejlsberg is the chief architect for C#. It has an object-oriented syntax that evolved out of C++. The most recent version of the language is 3.0, and it was released in conjunction with the .NET Framework 3.5

In 1999, when Anders Hejlsberg formed a team to create the language, they originally planned to call it COOL (C-like Object Oriented Language). However, there were copyright problems with that name, and it was renamed C#. C Sharp in music means a half of a step higher in pitch. In programming, C Sharp indicates that this is an outgrowth of C++.

Anders Hejlsberg has repeated said that flaws in most major programming languages (e.g. C++, Java, Delphi, and Smalltalk) drove the fundamentals of the Common Language Runtime (CLR), which, in turn, drove the design of the C# programming language itself.

C# 1.2 – released April 2003
C# 2.0 – released November 2005
C# 3.0 – released November 2007
C# 4.0 – in development

Design Goals:

C# is intended to be a simple, modern, general-purpose, object-oriented programming language.

The language should provide support for:

strong type checking
array bounds checking
detection of attempts to use uninitialized variables
automatic garbage collection
Software robustness
durability
programmer productivity

The language is for developing software components suitable for deployment in distributed environments.
Source code portability and programmer portability are important, especially for those programmers already familiar with C and C++.
internationalization is very important.
C# is intended to be suitable for writing applications for both hosted and embedded systems

Distingushing Features of C#

There are no global variables or functions. All methods and members must be declared within classes. Static members of public classes can substitute for global variables and functions.
Local variables cannot shadow variables of the enclosing block, unlike C and C++.
C# supports a strict Boolean datatype, bool. Statements that take conditions, such as while and if, require an expression of a boolean type. While C++ also has a boolean type, it can be freely converted to and from integers
In C#, memory address pointers can only be used within blocks specifically marked as unsafe, and programs with unsafe code need appropriate permissions to run.
Managed memory cannot be explicitly freed; instead, it is automatically garbage collected.
Multiple inheritance is not supported, although a class can implement any number of interfaces.
C# is more typesafe than C++.

Background: ASP.NET is a web application framework developed by Microsoft. The framework makes it possible for programmers to build dynamic web sites, web applications and web services. ASP.NET is built on the Common Language Runtime (CLR). The CLR allows programmers to write ASP.NET code using any supported .NET language.

After the release of Internet Information Services 4.0 in 1997, Microsoft began researching possibilities for a new web application model that would solve common complaints about ASP, especially with regard to separation of presentation and content and being able to write "clean" code. Mark Anders, a manager on the IIS team, and Scott Guthrie, who had joined Microsoft in 1997 after graduating from Duke University, were tasked with determining what that model would look like.

The initial version was called "XSP", but the "X" did not actually stand for anything. It was decided to build the new platform on top of the Common Language Runtime (CLR), as it offered an object-oriented programming environment, garbage collection and other features that were seen as desirable features that Microsoft's Component Object Model platform didn't support.

XSP was renamed to ASP+ as it was seen as being the successor of Active Server Pages. Then, in 2000, it was renamed to ASP.NET to emphasize that it rested on the underlying .NET framework.

Versions: ASP.NET 1.0 was released in January of 2002. 2.0 was released in November 2005, and 3.0 in November 2006. The current version is 3.5, and it came out in November 2007. 4.0 is scheduled to released in the next few months.

Background: ADO.NET is an outgrowth of ADO (ActiveX Data Objects) technology. ADO relied on COM objects whereas ADO.NET is based on the .NET Framework. ADO.NET does not replace ADO for the COM programmer; rather, it provides the .NET programmer with access to relational data sources, XML, and application data.

Purpose: ADO.NET is used to access data and data services. The data is usually a relational database, but it does not have to be.

Architecture: ADO.NET is part of the Base Class Library. ADO.NET consists of two parts:

Data Provider

Data providers provide access to the data source. The data source can be: SQL Server, Oracle, or OLEDB (ex. Access). Each data source has its own set of provider objects, but they all include these common utility classes:

Connection – Provides a connection to the datasoure. It is like a phone line that connects the application to the database.
Command – Command is used to perform some action (add, update, delete, select, etc.) on the database.
Parameter – This is a variable in the command.
DataAdapter – The data adapter provides a bridge between the data source object and the data set object.
DataReader – Allows you to access records sequentially, one record at a time.

Datasets

DataSets represent in-memory relational databases. Datasets represent a schema that can contain one or more tables and the relationships between the tables.

DataTable represents a single data table that is made up of rows and columns.
DataView is an overlay for a datatable that can contain a sort and a filter.
DataRelation is a relation between tables.
Constraint describes an enforced property of the database.

A DataSet is populated from a database by a DataAdapter whose Connection and Command properties have been specified. A DataSet can save its contents to XML, or populate itself from XML, making it very useful for web services and distributed computing.

Here are a few things you need to understand about remoting:

Purpose: .NET Remoting makes it possible for software components to interact across application domains.
History: .NET Remoting is an API that was introduced with .NET Framework 1.0 in 2002 to improve upon earlier technologies for interprocess communication.
- In 1990, OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) was developed;
- in 1993, COM (Component Object Model) was created
- and in 1997, this was advanced to DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) and renamed to ActiveX;
- in 2000, COM+ came into being;
- in 2002, .NET remoting was introduced;
- in 2007, WCF technologies were implemented in NET Framework 3.0
Historical Problems: DCOM had its problems as it relied on proprietary format. Also there were problems of communication between COM objects spread across firewalls. .NET Remoting eliminated these difficulties by supporting various transport and communication protocols and by being adaptable to diverse network environments.
General Concepts: .NET Remoting allows an application to make an object (which is called a "remotable object") available across remoting boundaries. This can include different appdomains, processes or even different computers connected by a network. The .NET Remoting runtime hosts the listener for requests to the object in the appdomain of the server application. At the client end, any requests to the remotable object are proxied by the .NET Remoting runtime over Channel objects, that encapsulate the actual transport mode, including TCP streams, HTTP streams and named pipes. As a result, by instantiating proper Channel objects, a .NET Remoting application can be made to support different communication protocols without recompiling the application. The runtime itself manages the act of serialization and marshalling of objects across the client and server appdomains.
