•1 Open Photoshop and design your Joomla template background. Create the template without any boxes for content or information.

•2
Create a new layer and name it “content_joomla.” This layer is incredibly important, as it is where the major content of the site will load. This should be a large box set in the middle. It can be any color.

•3
Create a thin sidebar either on the left or right of the template. This is optional, but it is where links to other pages will load. Depending on where you wish to place the sidebar you will name it either “left_joomla” or “right_joomla.” You can use both a left and right sidebar at the same time if you want.

•4
Design a header to your website. The name of the website will go here. Name this layer “top_joomla.”

•5
Create a footer and name the layer “footer_joomla.” Footers are not always used, and you can skip creating one if you want.

•6
Go to PSD2CSS Online (see References for a link). Load your PSD file into the website by clicking “Browse” and selecting your Joomla template. Click “Upload File” to confirm. After 20 or 30 seconds the website will finish converting your PSD file into a CSS file. CSS, or Cascading Style Sheet, is the format that websites use to display colors. Save the CSS file.

•7
Go to Joomla, enter the Content Manager and upload the CSS file. Select the new template and press the “Default” button at the top of the screen. Go to your Joomla website–it will now display the theme you created.
